Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before [Mar. 26th, 2009|03:07 pm]

So for lunch I was doing a Tuna Helper dish for the first time, and Allie reminds me to drain the tuna before adding it to the mix, otherwise it would turn the whole thing soggy-- Tuna Helpless, as she quipped.

I retorted that, knowing me, it would as likely turn out to be Tuna Hell. That cracked her up.

Seeing as I already had as many as three fleshed out D&D characters I had never gotten to play with yet, it seemed silly to be making any more. Silliness seldom stops me from doing certain things however, and I decided that Tarkov, Farlow, and Siya would be lonely all by themselves; they needed a party.

The Wizard )

The Paladin )

So now we had the rudiments of a party-- a little geared towards offense, but with myself being the sole architect of this gathering, one can scarcely expect something as quaint as balance.

When the PHB2 came out, I was told a little about the Primal classes, including the Druid, which gave me some ideas. Having looked over the book myself, I saw that another viable option for an additional controller in the team was available.

The Warden )

The Barbarian )

So there you have it. None of these guys even have character sheets yet; just placeholder images and glimpses of lives into whose shoes I may want to jump in in the future. The biggest temptation I'm trying to resist is the thought of just taking the lot of them, saying bollocks to actually playing the game, and then setting them down on their own adventures with each other, where I am both PCs, NPCs, and DM.

I think that's called 'writing'.

Godspeed~

Ching Chong Nip Nong Panda + PHB2 Sandwich~ [Mar. 25th, 2009|08:43 pm]

I did promise to say something about this movie, so let me just get it out of the way, and then we can move on with all our lives. Also, I have no credentials for cinematic criticism, so pay no attention to moi, but here is how my thoughts on it boil down: Kung Fu Panda never let me forget it was a movie made for children. It succeeded sometimes, which was probably what was most surprising, so it gets points for that at the very least. However, this is as opposed to, say, a Pixar film, where you look around sometimes and wonder what are children doing in this audience? Then again, I remember Dreamworks' earlier efforts, where you wonder what am I doing in this audience?? Oh, heaven, help me, get me out of here, oh, lord. In conclusion: great effort from Dreamworks, almost all in the right directions, and I just hope they don't blow it on Monsters Versus Aliens.

Bonus review: Secrets of the Furious Five. Wonderful supplement, but a complete ripoff when they make it so that the only way to purchase it is to buy the Action Pack, meaning that the original movie clings to it like some unwelcome cordyceps fungus. At a mere thirty minutes in length (not including the fairly anemic extras), the cartoon feature's life is all but sucked out by the feature length film piggybacking with it in the plastic wrap, the bewildering addition singlehandedly jacking the price up to triple what it might have been reasonable to ask. Unless of course you don't actually have the movie yet. In which case, it's a good buy, and you won't be a sucker like me (I gave the extra DVD to my little sister lul).

The cartoon itself proved almost reverse-climactic, by which I mean they put all the best parts first, leaving me first amused, then awesomed, then underwhelmed, and then downright bored towards the end. I'd be snittier, but two of the stories were cute enough to make me forget that this was a universe written by people who couldn't be bothered to name a tiger, snake, monkey, mantis and crane other than Tigress, Snake, Monkey, Mantis, and Crane.

The weekend saw the advent of some kind of Dungeons and Dragons Day, which [info]demota was kind enough to inform me of, but I was involved in an advent of a different sort elsewhere, in the Light of the World retreat at my local parish. It wasn't that I was uninterested in D&D Day-- it would have been the perfect chance I'd been looking for to finally get some real, hands-on experience doing tabletop with real people-- but it came at a time in my life when I'm seriously reevaluating my priorities.

No contest, really. Allie was also pretty excited about the retreat, and markedly less excited about D&D, so that helped my decision along quite a bit. The irony is that I'd held off at first mentioning anything about the RCIA to her when we first went out, fearing that I'd scare her away if I looked like I was proselytizing poor, innocent young women. Now she's helping drag me to some very Catholic activities in my very own parish (did I mention that she volunteered at a Knights of Columbus event completely on her own? She's awesome (even if she did drag me to that one too, after a twelve-hour workday)).

Anyhoo, still not playing, but I got the Player's Handbook 2 regardless. Personal opinion: I'm actually kind of glad that pretty much everything I need is in the first one, aside from some pretty jaw-dropping new feats. The races seem to include a nod to Hindu-Buddhist spirituality (Deva), a concession to furries (lol Shifters), and the Goliaths, the only one I was interested enough in to make a character for. Thinking of a female Goliath barbarian and a male Human Warden. Got a male Dwarf Paladin lying around I want to develop too, so I guess all that can be saved for another post.

Allie just reminded me that ACen has a tabletop gaming room, so I'll see if something can't be scared up from that. Looks like she'll be dragging me to the ACen forums for this.

In the meantime, robust character generation in a game I never actually play remains worth my money.

Godspeed!

Real quick entry before I actually have the time to sit down and yap about anything. I was going to keep quiet, but heck, I paid a cool sixty dollars for Valkyria Chronicles on a whim, so I should have the right to make some fun of it.

Hahahahaha, what the heck is this, Baby's First War? This stuff is so watered down, they might as well be fighting with paintball guns for all the 'horrors' of war they're trying to convey.

Not that I know anything; I hear paintballs hurt.

Boys and Their Toys [Jul. 18th, 2008|12:44 pm]

Been a weird, but AWESOME week altogether, mostly of the DAAAAWWWWW and EEEEEEEEEEEE variety, but the geekery remains! The Watchmen trailer seems to indicate that the movie will make sweet, tender love to my eyes, and as an added bonus, they use the Smashing Pumpkins song I loved so much from one of the old Batman movies, and at half speed, which I would like to assert is AWESOME TO D MAXX!!1!

In the meantime, I've now made a grand total of three characters for Dungeons and Dragons 4th Ed, and still have no one to play it with! Fortunately, I'm finding a great deal of recreation and distraction in the character generation process by itself, which I find robust enough to support my needs, and restrictive enough to challenge my creativity. [info]demota is a seasoned veteran and is helping me hammer out the more technical and mechanical aspects of balance and stat-skill management, but backstory is another matter, and I more or less can't wait to play these guys just to see how they'd interact with the rest of the party and the story.

I have a couple of unofficial personal rules: When playing a videogame where I have to look at my character's videogame butt for hours at a time, I will play a female if given a choice. When roleplaying, I will choose a male because I have the hormones for it. Thus, the first character I made is played to type, a noob-friendly (because I am a noob), straightforward, RAAAAAAAAR MANLY Greataxe Fighter, also a Dragonborn, because, as the rulebook puts, "I should choose it if I want to look like a dragon". HAHA. This one has, by far, the most fleshed out backstory of the three. So I'd really hate to see him die. Which seems pretty likely, given the personality I have for him. Mechanically, he should be easy to play, but RP-wise, I foresee some... ahem... "in-character friction". Or something. I don't know how this works, this is why I want to play.

Second character is a class I'd like to experiment with, the Warlord, and will mostly be played for the lulz, considering his roleplay schticks. He'll be a little tricky to play mechanically with, especially for a nub like me, but his laid back nature I see making for a smoother party dynamic.

The third... well... the third. If a party I join already has a Fighter and Warlord, I'd prefer to fill out an unused role, but the only classes left to me with any sort of appeal is either a Ranger or a Rogue. I chose Ranger, for its focus on attacks, but I kind of needed to totally jack it up, because the last thing I wanted to do was roleplay as Legolas.

The first thing I did to make playing a Ranger interesting is to make her female. SCORE! But to make the most of the Ranger class, I kind of needed to make her an Elf. I hate Elves. SO I play against type, and make her a black Elf. No, not Drow, smartypants, I hate Drow even more-- nothing worse than to take regular Elves, make them all EMO EVIL and give them literally BLACK SKIN because they live UNDERGROUND and are SO MISUNDERSTOOD. No, a nice, deep chocolate, brown sugar Elf. And I made her bald too.

To make her even more interesting, I want to skew her stats too, contrast her from my more balanced characters. So she'll be like, STUPID fast, but have a bad Charisma score, which reflects how she slouches and is generally depressing to be around. Depending on what the setting mood is, I can either play her for morbid laughs, or CRAAAWLING IIIN MY SKIIIN. Which is still good for a laugh.

Finally, I absolutely hate bows. But to be half-decent as a ranged Ranger, I need to use bows. Good thing I was told it is okay to use throwing knives for roleplay, but have them mechanically 'count as' a longbow. Switching to melee might be a problem down the line, but I'm not too worried, as this girl will be dancing around the battlefield.

ADVANCE WARS: RUINED MY DAYS LOL [Oct. 16th, 2007|11:19 am]
[Tags|, ]
[the knight rests |rokkford]
[the knight's heart |rokken]
[the knight hears |Foo Fighters-- The Pretender]

The Wars series, after several iterations of game settings that featured brightly-coloured engines of destruction, has officially changed its look in the next game, Advance Wars: Days of Ruin.

Here is a trailer.

In a nutshell: no more CO powers, no more nations, no more neon orange tanks. Hello, meteorites killed 90% of mankind, hello ruined cities, hello none of the characters smile three chapters into this game, hello pillage and murder, hello roving bands of armed groups fighting each other for scant resources.

When the first few glimpses of the new game emerged through the Paris gameshow, 'concerned parties' *cough*[info]ninjadebugger[info]demota[info]fandomgreen*cough* were quick to appraise me of the situation. The concern of course was that I'd be... unnerved, given my, ah, attachments to one of the Advance Wars characters. After all, it was, quite literally, love at first sight.

FLAAAAAAAAAAAAK! FLAKALAKALAKALAKALAK FLAK!!!

Ahem. Excuse me.

Now, not only is Intelligent changing the look and feel of their game series, but they are forgoing use of the entire cast and crew they'd had around for three games. To be honest, I was pretty sad when I learned about it. Not livid like I was when I heard about the game now called *spit* Battallion Wars, which I will not link to here. Just... sad. The thing that almost became the Advance Wars for the Gamecube, among other things, was a break from the established aesthetic. It was ugly. Which made sense-- Intelligent had no hand in making it. Advance Wars: Days of Ruin isn't ugly, not by a long stretch. By all accounts, it's shaping up to be a pretty good game, too. And given Intelligent System's track record, I wouldn't expect anything less either.

I just really wish I'd sent their character design team that gushing, fanboyish thank you letter long, long ago though.

But anyway, when the news hit these shores officially, the more I learned about the new game, the more likely it became that I was going to buy it. I was going to pass at first, not out of an act of boycott or anything, but simply because I didn't think they'd have anything to offer me that interested me anymore. Watching the trailer though, it looks like a nice buy anyway-- it's still war, after all. And they at least had the decency not to say outright that any of the original crew had been killed in the cataclysmic meteorite storm. 10% of the population can fit a good number of survivors.

When in doubt, resort to creative denial!

Seriously though, putting aside the matter of Days of Ruin most likely belonging to a different continuity entirely, the theories and possibilities abound. [info]demota mentions a prequel scenario that sounds as attractive as it is unlikely. [info]fandomgreen and [info]stolisomancer talked about the possibility of the world's ending being Lash's fault, and I expressed my wholehearted support of thought in that direction, as it was implicit that she'd be the most likely to survive anything that she actually caused.

And barring everything else, there can always be Postapocalyptic Desert-Wanderers Lash and Hawke. I can still indulge in my personal pet fandom; it will just be in a different context and setting altogether. My imagination has room enough for that.

It makes sense of sorts, really. As [info]lurkerdrome mentioned, the possibilities for the original AW crew have been pretty much tapped out in the last game, and Dual Strike can arguably be taken as the close to our look into their world. I just wish Intelligent Systems had told us beforehand or something, I dunno. And I can't help but feel that the Bolt Guard was royally and undeservedly stiffed. Poor Kindle.

In the end, Days of Ruin is simply different, and that's probably the safest and truest thing that can be said about it. Change always needs some adapting to, but I can't help but feel that this is a small step towards something I wouldn't buy. Everything has its place, and everything in its place, and while I appreciate the abstract beauty of tactical war and the gritty nobility of combat on the field, it's not really what I liked Advance Wars for. Sometimes, you just want to play with your little tanks and armies and blow shit up without having to deal with orphaned children, mutilated war veterans, concentration camps and whatnot.

Advance Wars is getting the EXTREEEEEEEEME treatment, and depending on how it goes, I might even ride along, just out of sheer momentum. And if I lose interest, then there's still the hope that, as with many things human, this change is at the far end of a cycle, and the whole thing will come full circle again someday, with the return of blue skies over a war-torn, but somehow still happy world.

And who knows? Somewhere into the later chapters, or perhaps in a sequel, a jeep may emerge from the dust-enveloped landscape, bearing a precocious female warrior, fighter or tactician, it doesn't matter, but preferably with ridiculous hair. And on the villains' side.

So to all those who were worried about me for a while, thanks, your concern is appreciated. I'm taking it better than I expected to, really, all things considered. It's not like my dog died or anything.

And you'd probably be surprised how well I'd take it if my dog did die. It helps to be a cold-hearted ass sometimes.

COME ON, INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS, MADS NEEDS HIS EVIL WAR LOLIS, DON'T FAIL DADDY NOW

Just installed and started playing Fallout. I went straight to the old Vault for the water purification chip and then got eaten by a mutant mole rat despite attacking it several times in the groin with a knife.

I may need to reassess my strategy.
